High School/Prep League Update; Week 5.

CANTON –New England Pro Am Hockey’s High School/Prep Summer Hockey League played the fifth week of their season on July 23 at the Canton Ice House.

Wild 3 vs. Blue Jackets 6:

The Blue Jackets (2-2-0) have continued their comeback tour by reeling off their second straight win as they doubled up and defeated the Wild (1-3-0) 6-3 in their Week 5 contest.

They fell short in the end, but the Wild did hold the advantage through the game’s first half, scoring three to the Blue Jackets two. Catholic Memorial’s Sean Barry broke the seal and then Canton High’s Andrew Valkanas netted a pair to account for the Wild’s three goals.

Unfortunately, those three first half scores were all the Wild were to have in the contest as Blue Jackets goaltender Joe Eskander slammed the door shut in the second half, blanking them on the side. And while the Blue Jacket defense went to work, so did the offense, doubling up on their total for four in the half to secure the 6-3 victory.

Jack Woods went home as the game’s leading scorer with a goal and two assists for the Blue Jackets. It was a performance seconded by a pair of points from Blue Jackets teammates Mike Tierney (2G) and BC High’s Jacob Christian (2A).

Predators 6 vs. Redwings 3:

Three was the magic number in the Week 5 contest between the Predators (3-0-1) and the Redwings (0-4-0). The Predators getting the upper hand as they went three’s aside to double up the Redwings for a 6-3 victory.

The Predators came out strong in the first half, the offense pumping in three, while netminder Christopher Hart and the defense kept the Redwings off the board. A 3-0, halftime lead was assumed by the Preds on goals by Xaverian products Jewett Brennan, Matthew Casey and Thomas Dunn.

Second half play saw the two sides net three apiece, the Predators’ three-goal advantage coming into the half being equal at its end. The final score finishing at 6-3.

Brennan (2G, 1A) Leo Owens (1G, 2A) and Jake Curley (1G, 2A) were credited as the game’s leading point scorers with three points apiece. Drew Coady, Thomas Lesser and Robert Dumais were credited with the three Redwings goals.

Flames vs. Sharks:

The Flames (4-1-0) run though the division continued as they ripped off yet another win, punishing the Sharks (1-3-1) with an 8-1 victory on Monday night.

It was all Flames in the first as they piled on to take a comfy, 4-0 cushion into the halftime break. A pair for Archbishop William’s Samuel Barry and one each for Oliver Ames High teammates Duncan Pereira and Hunter Costello accounted for the four scores on the board for the Flames, while netminder Owen Connor did his job keeping his side of the scoresheet clean.

Out of the break, the Flames went right back after it with another goal from Costello less than three minutes in. The Flames did “faulter” a bit, but it was merely a blemish. Like the first, the Flames scored another four. Unlike the first, in the second they did surrender a single goal to the Sharks. The half was played at 4-1 and the game ended at 8-1.

Pereira was the game’s leading scoring, burying three of his own and assisting on another for a four-point contest (3G, 1A). Flame teammates Costello (2G, 1A) and Will Martin (1G, 2A) also put in with three-point affairs.

Braintree High’s Jack Ryan was credited with the Sharks’ goal in the contest.
